Here are the views to the east that I promised - the Salton Sea, and the Chocolate mountains of Arizona in the far distance. The Salton Sea was formed due to a man-made disaster back in the early 1900's. An irrigation canal levy broke allowing the Colorado River to flood the Salton Basin forming a huge saltwater sea. This was once a thriving recreational and fishing area (fish were introduced from the Gulf of California), but as the sea has evaporated over the years with no replenishment of fresh water, the salinity has increased to the point where much of the sea life has died, polluting the water. It's still very pretty from a distance.
